Management isn’t the same as running a business or a nonprofit, so it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you need to be the CEO type to make a living. If you want to work for yourself, I recommend that you find a way to create a self-employed business that is 100% your own. That doesn’t mean you need to hire someone to do all your work for you.

We use the term "self-employed business" here because it is not about having someone else do the work for you. Your job as the owner of the business is to set the vision, hire people to do the work, and make sure that people working for you are motivated to do their jobs. You should be able to hire workers on your own, and you should be able to grow the company based on the work you have.

Self-employed businesses are a different beast than sole proprietorships because they don’t have a lot of the same rules about how they operate. For instance, you should be able to hire people to work for you and have them be motivated to do the work. You should be allowed to use a team. And yes, you should be allowed to hire employees based on referrals.

I want to emphasize the word “should’ because it may seem counter-intuitive to give people the power to hire on their own. But it’s not counter-intuitive, because if you give people the power to hire on your own, you will have more freedom to grow your business. You will be able to hire more people, hire more people, hire more people, hire more people.

If you want to hire workers to do your work for you, then you have to give them more power. Otherwise, they will just be your employees who are doing your bidding. The power you give them is just a question of giving them the ability to hire more people. A good way to figure this out is to ask yourself why you want to add people to your team.


I think the most important reason is to understand the work you do.


If you want to hire people to do your work, you need to understand what they do. To do that you have to understand exactly why they are needed for the job. If you don’t, you’re just hiring people that you could hire anyway.

The reason why you need to understand exactly what a person does is that they have to understand what they do. If they don't, they won't be able to explain their job to you. This is the same reason why in the business world it is important to understand what a person does.
