While there were still people being hired in the industry, it was clear that the industry would be impacted, and it's also clear that the video game industry would be impacted. The biggest job gap however is the one between skateboarders and board builders.

This isn't a surprise. In order to make money in either line of work, you need to be a prodigy. While prodigies are extremely rare in the skateboarding industry, they're much more common in the board building industry. The difference is pretty obvious, but in some ways, both are really competitive fields. If you’re a prodigy, you typically move up quickly. Board builders, on the other hand, typically move slowly and are much more difficult.

Board builders and prodigies really are the two extremes of the skill spectrum in skateboarding.

They are both great careers. I'm not going to call them completely equal, but they are both very lucrative. In terms of skateboarders, the ones that make the money are the ones with the greatest skill, so they need to be good at something. In other words, they need to be prodigies. The best prodigies are usually the ones that skate in the top divisions.

I'm not entirely surprised to see the pro skateboarder fail, but I'm not entirely surprised this happened. With so many pro skateboarders getting their start, I'm sure there were more who weren't successful. It's one thing to learn how to skateboard by watching pro videos but, in general, skaters who are more focused on skating on the street are going to be more successful.
